Fundamental Principles about Home on the Rock

How do we identify ourselves?

  • By our Statement of Faith
  • By our Standard of Conduct
  • By our literal interpretation of the Bible

The foundational elements of HOTR not open to debate or change:

  • We are Christian
  • The foundation of all our guidelines is the Bible
  • We are conservative
  • We have an appointed, versus elected, Board
  • Membership in HOTR is a privilege, not a right.

To further explain our foundational elements:

  • We are Christian – our Statement of Faith defines the beliefs we share.
  • We are conservative.
  1. Our Standard of Conduct is based on Biblical principles.
  2. To further explain/define our Standard of Conduct, the following are examples of conduct that is in conflict with our Standard of Conduct:
    1. "Living in sin" (e.g., living with a man/woman to whom you are not married)
    2. Homosexual conduct
    3. Public displays of affection between unrelated and unmarried teens and adults
    4. Children who show disrespect to adults, and who are not corrected or are not amenable to correction by their parents.
    5. Undisciplined children.
    6. Cursing, swearing, and lying by adults or children.
  1. We agree not to proselytize within the group. Such action is seen as a failure of one Christian to respect the doctrinal beliefs of another.
  • We have an appointed board – just as CHEO and most other Christian support groups, our board members are selected by prayer. This appointed board allows for the continuity necessary for our group.
  • Membership is a privilege – one that can be revoked or not offered in the event that a family’s values and/or conduct conflicts with our Statement of Faith or Standard of Conduct.

Important Note:

HOTR will not compromise our standards or foundational principles to conform to others’ ideas of how a support group should operate. Families who are uncomfortable with our principles or our unwillingness to compromise are encouraged to seek another group that better fits their needs.

Our Purpose:

Our purpose is stated in our Statement of Ministry: We exist to assist Christians to home educate their own children.

What our purpose is NOT: To serve as a social service agency responsible to raise or educate your children for you.

How we accomplish our purpose:

  • By providing advice, counsel, and encouragement to one another.
  • By sharing our communal knowledge and wisdom.

Note: These 2 are met through support group meetings, information provided in newsletter, Enrichment Programs, personal contacts between members, special informational meetings (such as notification workshop), and information provided in our Members' webpages.

  • By supplying consistent leadership.

Note: This is met by appointed/continuing, as opposed to elected/changing, leadership

  • By providing opportunities for members to associate with other like-minded families.

Note: This is met through our various programs and special events

  • By providing the opportunity to qualify for group discounts on educational materials.

Note: This is met by our group subscription offers
